Except for the following interruptions, the system has been operating correctly and continuously since September 14, 2006:
October 13, 2006: Computer shut down from about 3:00 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. due to an automatic OS update by Microsoft that rebooted the computer, but did not restart VWS. Have now set the updates to be manually installed.
November 20, 2006: Due to some kind of malfunction, the computer did not send data to the Internet from about 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
November 21 and 22, 2006: Rain gauge failed to transmit to the base unit. Did a reset of the base unit which lost the total rain information. Had to reset the sea level barometer. There was also a power bump that crashed computers, even those on UPS. Not a good day. The rainfall may be a few mm out for these days. The rain gauge was brought inside to dry out and was placed outside again at about 9:45 a.m. on November 22, 2006. It appears it may be a moisture problem with the rain gauge circuitry. This problem has been experienced by others after heavy rainfall or storms.
November 27, 2006. Power was off from about 13:20 to 22:30. No readings were uploaded or recorded in the database. The reason for the power failure was a small branch that bent under the weight of snow and shorted the high voltage lines to this area. The short burned through two of the three phase wires, causing them to fall to the ground. The repair was delayed by many other power failures resulting from severe weather conditions.
November 27, 2006. Computer system failure from about 24:00 until 7:40 on November 28, 2006. The computer was frozen for some unknown reason and had to be forced off by doing a reset of the power switch.
December 15, 2006 at 4:01 power failure. The weather computer was on UPS, but unattended and the outage was too long for the UPS. The system was restarted at about 13:45 on December 19, 2006.
From September 4 to 26, 2007, I had problems with uploading files to the web-site. They appeared to be due to use of the AVG Internet Security Software. I had to turn off the firewall to allow the uploads to proceed. On September 26, 2007, I found there was a parameter I could set that did the FTP login in "Passive Mode" and that resolved the problem.
